The Grand Valley Dressage Society (GVDS) is a local chapter of the Rocky Mountain Dressage Society (RMDS). RMDS is a Group Member Organization (GMO) of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) in Region Five. GVDS was founded in January 1997. We have over 90 members in our club. We are located in the west-central part of Colorado, with members all the way from Vail to Durango and some in Utah. Most of our activities are centered in the Grand Junction area.
The GVDS mission is to perpetuate the harmony between horse and rider through the art of dressage. We promote dressage by supporting the education of horse and rider, and encourage sportsmanship and competition.
We meet monthly between September and May (usually on the first Thursday of the month - see our Calendar page) and have activities scheduled year round. We hold schooling shows, recognized shows, clinics, video-nights, and social gatherings.
What Is Dressage?
The word dressage (rhymes with "massage") is derived from a French term meaning "training." It is not only a method of schooling, but also a competitive equestrian sport. Dressage is considered "classical training," because it uses gymnastic exercises-a series of movements and figures-which have been studied and developed for centuries. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria, with its white Lipizzan stallions, is perhaps the most familiar institution dedicated exclusively to the classical art of riding. Once an activity of royalty, today dressage has evolved into a discipline and competitive sport accessible to all horses and riders.
